FAQ’s

What sort of exercise will I be doing?

You will cover all the key aspects of fitness – cardio, balance, strength, mobility and core – with particular focus on the areas which need the most work.  You are likely to do a combination of: our video classes, small routines you can do at home and whatever form of cardio you are able and willing to do (e.g. walks, cycling or swimming).

How much exercise am I be expected to do each week?

This will vary but generally we aim for at least the 150 minutes per week target recommended by the NHS.  Within this some of the exercise will be short and sharp – and some slightly less so.  Typically you have one day a week without any exercise, perhaps two at the start, and on some days your exercise will just be a stretching routine or video.

What happens if I don’t do all the exercises?

Your overall score – what proportion of the exercise you complete each week – will be recorded but not in a (very) judgmental manner.  Learning what does and doesn’t work is a useful part of the process and helps us develop an exercise regime that sticks.

Research suggests that people are less likely to adopt habits if they beat themselves up so whilst the weekly calls give you a sense of accountability, it is a soft and nurturing accountability!

When do the weekly catch-ups happen?

They take place at the same time – or at least on the same day – every week.  We agree the most suitable day at the start.

Where do the face to face sessions take place?

Ideally at your home.  We want you to get used to doing the routines wherever is most convenient to you.

How fit do I have to be?

Come as you are.  One of the purposes of doing fitness for older people is to help them navigate towards the exercises that they can usefully do – it’s probably more than you think.  If you have an injury or medical condition that affects what exercise you can do then we will plan responsibly around it – sometimes in consultation with your physio and/or GP.

What happens if I need to miss or need to rearrange a weekly appointment?

We leave space for one ‘missed week’ during the programme.  But this doesn’t mean you pause the work during that week.  Instead you redo the previous week’s programme and at the next session we review your exercise over two weeks rather than one.

If you miss more than one week then it will not be carried over.

What happens at the end of the programme?

We will discuss this in the final session.  Ideally you will be able to continue with your exercise programme under your own steam.   But we do offer a more light touch check-in to help maintain the momentum.

What equipment do I need?

None. We build the programme around whatever equipment and space you have available.  In some cases we will recommend buying a particular item and if you already have fitness equipment (and it is suitable) then we will incorporate it into your programme.
